Homemade French Fries Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 4 large potatoes (Russet potatoes work well)
  • 2-3 cups vegetable oil (for frying)
  • Salt to taste
  • Optional: herbs or spices like paprika, garlic powder, or rosemary for seasoning

Instructions:

  1. Preparation:
    • Wash the potatoes thoroughly to remove any dirt.
    • Peel the potatoes if desired. Leaving the skin on can add extra texture and nutrients.
    • Cut the potatoes into even-sized sticks or wedges, about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick.
  2. Soaking (Optional but recommended):
    • Soak the cut potatoes in a bowl of cold water for at least 30 minutes or up to overnight. This helps remove excess starch, resulting in crispier fries.
  3. Frying:
    • Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or a large pot to around 350°F (175°C). Use enough oil to fully submerge the fries.
    • Drain the soaked potatoes and pat them dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.
    • Carefully add a batch of potatoes to the hot oil, ensuring not to overcrowd the fryer or pot. Fry in batches if needed.
    • Fry the potatoes for about 5-7 minutes or until they are golden brown and crispy. Stir occasionally for even frying.
    • Use a slotted spoon or a frying basket to remove the fries from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
    • Repeat the frying process with the remaining batches of potatoes.
  4. Seasoning:
    • While the fries are still hot, sprinkle them with salt and any optional herbs or spices according to your taste preferences.
    • Toss the fries gently to evenly distribute the seasoning.
  5. Serving:
    • Serve the homemade French fries hot and crispy with your favorite dipping sauces like ketchup, mayonnaise, or aioli.

Tips:

  • For extra crispy fries, you can double-fry them. After the first fry, let the fries cool for a few minutes, then fry them again at a slightly higher temperature until they reach your desired crispiness.
  • Experiment with different seasonings like chili powder, Cajun seasoning, or truffle salt for unique flavor variations.
  • Serve the fries immediately for the best taste and texture.
