Ingredients:

  • 1 cup yellow lentils (toor dal)
  • 1 cup wheat flour
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 2-3 green chilies, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnishing
  • Lemon wedges for serving

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Dal (Lentil Soup):
    • Wash the lentils thoroughly and soak them in water for about 30 minutes.
    • In a pressure cooker, add the soaked lentils, chopped tomatoes, green chilies, ginger-garlic paste, turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, garam masala, salt, and 3 cups of water.
    • Pressure cook for about 3-4 whistles or until the lentils are soft and cooked.
  2. Make the Dhokli (Wheat Flour Dumplings):
    • In a mixing bowl, add wheat flour, salt, 1 tablespoon oil, and a little water to make a firm dough.
    • Roll out the dough into a thin chapati-like sheet.
    • Cut the sheet into small diamond-shaped pieces (dhokli).
  3. Cooking Dhokli and Assembling:
    • Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Let them splutter.
    • Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
    • Pour the cooked lentil mixture (dal) into the pan and bring it to a boil.
    • Drop the prepared dhokli pieces into the boiling dal one by one.
    • Cook on medium heat for about 10-15 minutes or until the dhokli is cooked through and soft.
    • Adjust the consistency of the dal dhokli by adding more water if needed.
    • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
  4. Serve:
    • Serve hot with a drizzle of lemon juice on top.
    • You can also serve it with a dollop of ghee for added flavor.
